MD/MPH, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, 2023
Alyssa is a rising second year medical student in the MD/MPH program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. As a medical student, she has been committed to serving her community as the Project Manager for the Department of Community Service (DOCS) Jack and Jill Health Fair, event planner for Peds Partners (an organization for children with chronic illness), and her academic society’s events and community service coordinator. When COVID-19 hit, Alyssa joined the Surveillance Program Assessing Risk and Knowledge of Coronavirus (SPARK-C), a research project offering free antibody testing for COVID-19 to the Miami-Dade Community, callbacks and contact tracing for a local testing site, and the Sponsorship Team for Miami Med COVID Help. Alyssa graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018 and spent her gap year working at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as a medical scribe. Alyssa was a Civic Scholar at UPenn and for her Capstone Research Project, she continued her long-term commitment to children with disabilities and global health research. While volunteering in Ghana, Nepal, and the US as well as while studying abroad in India, South Africa, and Brazil, she completed a qualitative, exploratory analysis of the factors affecting access to healthcare and education for children with disabilities in these locations. As a research scholar for GEH LAB, Alyssa is excited to build upon this professional experience and further explore access to healthcare and education, quality of life, and disaster preparedness (i.e. COVID-19, flooding, etc.) for children with disabilities in Myanmar. Ultimately, Alyssa aspires to combine her interests in orthopedics, physical medicine & rehabilitation, pediatrics, and global and public health to become a physician dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children with disabilities in the clinic and society, both at home and abroad.
